“Bring the church into the neighborhood,” is how Stake President Jay Cheng described the Ma On Shan Chapel Open House held on Saturday, 26 July 2008. Not only is the chapel in the neighborhood, it is also in one of the well known shopping malls in the heart of the neighborhood. Located in the midst of several apartment complexes, many church members find it convenient to walk the short distance from their homes to church.

The chapel in the mall draws attention from neighbors walking by. Mr. Jacky Lai, the bishop (pastor) of the Ma On Shan Chapel, and his members took a month and a half in preparation for the open house. Cantonese and Mandarin speaking missionaries assisted throughout the day in inviting neighbors to visit the facilities. Visitors were welcomed by the church members. The event drew more than 90 people. Thirty of whom were visitors for the first time.

Inside the chapel, visitors see the art work of Holy Temples adorning the walls. These art works are done by the Primary, a children’s organization for ages three to eleven. Through lessons, activities and songs, lay Primary leaders and teachers help parents by teaching children the gospel of Jesus Christ. They believe in the sacred teachings of the temple, “This is the Lord’s house. We are His children.”

In the Aaronic Priesthood room, young men from ages 12 to 17 are taught by lay adult leaders and advisers. The young men participate in Sunday lessons and midweek activities such as athletics, cultural activities and Boy Scouts. The Duty to God programs helps young men live the teachings of Jesus Christ and fulfill priesthood duties.

Displayed in the Young women’s room are colorful quilts made by young women ages 12 to 17. These quilts will serve as gifts for them when they become 18 years of age and graduate into the Relief Society program. It is a sweet token that brings fond memories for the young women. In addition, Sunday Lessons, midweek activities and personal progress achievement program help young women to live specific values. A decorated bookmark, “Families can be together forever” was presented to all visitors.

The Melchizedek Priesthood is for men ages 18 and older who faithfully live Church standards. They provide the leadership and strength for the Ma On Shan Ward. In their Sunday meetings they are taught in doctrines, principles and duties. They serve others and build unity and brotherhood.

The Relief Society, a worldwide organization for the women of the church 18 years and older, posted personal testimonies on their walls for visitors to read. They also shared their homemaking skills, family financial management and food storage programs.

While entering the chapel, one member said, “My heart is touched and reminds me of a church scripture, ‘Organize yourselves…and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.’ found in Doctrine and Covenants 109:8.”
