Since the establishment of the Southern Far East Mission in 1955, the Church had fostered many good headers. By 1976, many members who had gone abroad to study started to come back. The number of members increased to 15. In February, the apostles Elder Gordon B. HINCKLEY and Elder KOMATSU, assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, came to Hong Kong to conduct the district conference and also to discuss the organization of a stake.
Elder HINCKLEY came to Hong Kong again on 24 April 1976 and at the district conference he announced the disbandment of the existing Hong Kong District, which was followed immediately by the establishment of the Hong Kong Stake. Brother Sheldon POON was called to be the stake president and Brothers NG Kat-hing and AU Kwok-chiu his first and second counsellors. Eight wards and two branches came under the direction of the newly-established stake while the Victoria Branch, Yuen Long Branch, Sha Tin Branch, Sheung Shui Branch and Tiu Keng Leng Branch were still under the Hong Kong Mission. The Hong Kong District was reorganized with Brother TANG Tai-man as the president and Brothers LAU Kwun-ying and FUNG Shiu-fung as his first and second counsellors. |
