HELPING AND STRENGTHENING FAMILIES IN HONG KONG

‘Strengthen the Family’ Seminar at The Hong Kong Institute of Education

A first-time collaborative effort between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brigham Young University , the Hong Kong Institute of Education, the House of Learning and the Consortium of Institutes on Family in the Asian Region resulted in a two-day ‘Strengthen the Family’ seminar.

On 4 August 2009, an evening public seminar was held at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, featuring presentations by Larry Nelson, PhD, and Shirley Cox, PhD, DSW, two professors from Brigham Young University who specialize in social work and family therapy studies. Topics included parenting styles and child/adolescent outcomes and achieving family harmony through a weekly family night. Over 200 parents and educators attended and participated in the concluding question and answer period.

On the following day, Drs. Cox and Nelson and approximately 20 other professionals working in family-related areas in Hong Kong held a professional/academic exchange at the Hong Kong University Family Institute. Research findings and future ways to collaborate on strengthening and helping families survive in today’s world were presented and discussed.

Since “Families Are Forever” is an important principle of the Church, family issues and finding ways to help parents strengthen their family are of deep concern. The Church will hold more activities and events in the future focusing on families so as to share with its neighbours, the Hong Kong families, methods and resources which are useful in strengthening families.
