Elder Robert K Wilson (HK China Temple Presidency - 2nd counselor)
Bryan Chun West Point Ward
“And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten” (Moses 1:33).
I had the privilege to have the opportunity to attend the “Worlds without Number” special fireside by Elder Wilson, who is a former project manager at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory who oversaw the launch of the Spitzer space telescope, one of the 4 main observatories currently in space that uses infra-red to make images.
The theme being “worlds without number”, the presentation was about the universe and how much we know and don’t know about it. At this special fireside, I saw many wondrous images of the universe from all four of the observatories, and the number of stars and planets were beyond comprehension. The startling thing is that the stars that I saw on the screen only make up a small fraction of what is really out there. Just because we are not able to see the rest of the universe doesn’t mean that it is non-existent. Faith is similar: “……if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true” (Alma 32:21) .
The images also reflected how great the universe is and just how omnipotent the Lord is. Despite the Lord has created limitless worlds, far more than we can comprehend, he still knows each and every one of them, just like how he knows each and every one of us.” And the Lord God spake unto Moses, saying: The heavens, they are many, and they cannot be numbered unto man; but they are numbered unto me, for they are mine. And as one earth shall pass away, and the heavens thereof even so shall another come; and there is no end to my works, neither to my words ” (Moses 1:37-38).It is surprising to me that people think science and religion does not mix and somehow contradict each other. However in this case, science actually supports the ideas found in the scriptures.
There was also a Q & A session at the end where anyone could ask questions, and different topics were covered and many things revealed such as there are human like beings living in other planets. Interestingly, Elder Wilson could nearly always answer the questions with reference to the scriptures and he has shown me how everything can be linked to the gospel.
From this special fireside, I have learnt a lot about the universe and how the Lord has given us an opportunity to learn more about the creation of the very universe that we all live in. I testify that the gospel is true and that God really does know each and every one of us as well as everything else he has created, even each single grain of sand found on a beach. The Lord wants us to make the best of this life and the best way to do this is to educate ourselves and to nurture our spirit and return back as one of the many sons and daughters of God.
